Just in case you are wondering who Sebastien Loeb is, he is a guy who is so good behind the wheel that he won 9 world titles! You may think this is a brand new series, but it is actually an extension of the somewhat popular and fairly good WRC series of games that were a yearly franchise. Rally games are quite popular, but can Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo become the best rally game out there?
A Very Impressive Selection Of Stages
I thought we would start this review with one of the best aspects of Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo and that is the tracks. The game features accurately-mapped tracks by using GPS data. Milestone (the people behind the game) have done a great job with this. To give you an idea of the amount of courses this game has you will take part in rallies from Australia, San Remo, Sweden, Mexico, Alsace, Wales, Finland, and more.
The different tracks offer up different challenges. For example, the dirt roads of Mexico with all their gravel and tight turns mean that you will have to keep one eye on the road and another a few feet up ahead as more often than not there is some kind of huge drop at the side of the track! Monte Carlo has slick paved roads for you to take on where handling is the key. One of my favorite tracks was the Los Angeles track which is mainly tarmac with a little touch of dirt.
The different tracks in the game are what make this such a fun game for people who are rally fans. You see no two tracks feel the same and you will have to actually take the time to learn each track so you can shave a few seconds of your best times and also not slam into a wall, tree or go shooting off the side of the track and end up in a fiery pit! I have played pretty much every major rally game and I have to say that Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo has one of the best selection of tracks I have ever come across.
One Of The Best Selections Of Cars
I will admit that when it comes to racing games I am the kind of guy who likes to just pick a few different cars and stick with them. But those of you who love to have a huge selection of cars at your disposal you will love Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo. If you know anything about Sebastien Loeb then you will not be surprised to know that there is a good selection of Citroens here. This is just the top of the iceberg though and there is a huge car selection featuring some of the best rally cars from the 60’s all the way up to the beasts people are driving today.
What Kind Of Game Modes Are There?
There is a very in-depth career mode where you try to become the best rally driver in the world. Of course, there is a ton of races for you to take part in here. But there is just so much more tinkering and other things to do here that the career mode always has something for you to do. One thing that I am sure many of you will have a lot of fun with is just picking your favorite car and course and trying to get the best time.
The game mode that I had a lot of fun with though and offered a nice change of pace from the career mode was Loeb Experience. This gives you the chance to try and recreate some of the big moments from the main man’s career. You will have to drive certain cars, compete on certain tracks and have other things to deal with as well. It is a very interesting game mode and it works well if you are a fan of Sebastien Loeb as no doubt you will have seen or have heard about many of these events and it is cool being able to take part in them. On the flipside of this if you are not a huge rally fan, but just want a new rally game. Then you will find it interesting to learn a bit of his history and why he is one of the greatest rally drivers of all time.
How Do The Cars Handle?
This is of course what will make or break any rally game! I have played plenty of ultra realistic rally games as well as more arcadey types and I can have fun with both. Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo I feel is more on the realistic side. There are many, many sharp corners that you will swear are impossible. But when you consider these are based on real courses and the corners are just like they are in real life….. it makes you think that it is possible and you just have to figure out the best way to take the corner. There is a lot of fun to be had here, but I can see some people being put off by these controls.
There is certainly a learning curve here and I think that if you were to stick with the game and learn each track and what is the right car for you. That you will get a lot of enjoyment out of the game. But this is not to everyone’s taste and I can understand that. If you want a rally game you can just jump in and play, take corners at 80 mph then you may be disappointed with this game and have a hard time getting to grips with it.
Could Have Done With A Bit Of A Spit Shine
Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo is made by a team who do not have the budget of an EA or an Activision and this does show in the presentation. The game does not look bad, but it just lacks that little bit of polish and sometimes there is a frame rate issue here and there. It is not as bad as some other people are making out and as you are so focused on the track laying ahead of you. You do not notice the lack of polish. However, the frame rate may be something that does cause you some headaches.

Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo Final Thoughts
Sebastien Loeb Rally Evo is a very interesting game and I think it is the kind of game that you will either love and get right into. Or you will fire it up and be put off by the rather steep learning curve, shut the game off and never play it again! If you are a rally fan and like to have to really work to learn a track then this is a game that you will have a lot of fun with.
