For some reason, it is the cool thing to hate on Call of Duty these days. Which I really do not get. Now if you do not like the series fair enough, but Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was a game that some people wrote off as soon as that first trailer hit! Anyway, enough of that today we are looking at Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and seeing if this game is worthy of the mixed reception it is getting.
The Single Player Campaign
The story of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is something that you are either going to think is awesome or hate. It is a far cry from what the series started out with, but Call of Duty has been heading this way for a while now. The game is set in the future, mankind has gone out into space and has colonized planets and of course that has not exactly gone to plan.
You play the role of Nick Reyes who fast becomes the man standing in the way of a rebel organization who wants all life that originated on Earth dead. These guys do not take prisoners they just execute people. It is actually pretty brutal stuff and it does pump you up to take these guys down. Basically, all life on Earth is in danger and you need to step up and make sure that Earth and the people on it survive.
The campaign is kind of like a Michael Bay movie. It is loud, intense, full of explosions and strong characters and there is nothing wrong with that. The campaign is actually a lot of fun and after a short while you take control of a large ship and the game gives you for lack of a better term a hub world. From here you can tackle story missions or you can do side missions where you try and take down enemy basis, kill people of interest and in general try to make things harder for the bad guy. I can see why this sci-fi campaign is not to everyone’s taste, but if you give it a chance you will have a lot of fun.
Some Cool New Gameplay Elements
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare may not be remaking the wheel when it comes to first person shooters. But it does add a couple of things that are worth talking about. First of all is the anti-gravity sections of the game. In the campaign, there are sections where you are floating around in outer space. You could be near a ship or some asteroids, but you can float around, drag people to you and take them down. It is a lot of fun and the floating feel really does make you feel like you are in space. You can also get your hands on some anti-gravity grenades and these are awesome. You throw them at a group of enemies and they float in the air. Giving you the chance to blow them away while they are defenseless.
Another cool part about Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the mechs. As the game is set in the future there are robots that are used in this war. One is called Ethan and he is one of your right-hand men and he is fantastic. He is witty, helpful and you do genuinely care for him during the story. There are also several larger and more dangerous mechs that you will encounter as you play the game and figuring out how to take them down is fun and makes a nice change of pace from all the run and gun action.
The only gameplay element I was not crazy about and it is not really a new one, is the wall running. Now this is not really an issue with the campaign, but in multiplayer, the wall running can be an issue. The reason I say this is that it feels like you are running in slow motion. It is a minor complaint, but it can lead to many, many deaths.
Before we talk about the actual multiplayer we have to talk about the rigs and we are not talking about trucks here! The class system is well and truly gone now and in its place is Combat Rigs. These are different set ups for your character in multiplayer. There are six different rigs with each one offering a different play style. Different weapons, payloads, attributes and pretty much anything else you can think of will be dependent on what kind of Combat Rig you choose. It is actually a pretty cool system and I had a lot of fun messing around experimenting with each Combat Rig until I settled on, the Synaptic Rig which offered a more run and gun style of play. I am actually looking forward to seeing how they expand upon this in the next Call of Duty game.
As well as the Combat Rigs the weapons are impressive. There is a ton and I mean a ton of different weapon options that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare throws your way. It can be a little daunting at first, but figuring out what weapons and accessories fit your style of play is a lot of fun.
Isn’t Call of Duty All About The Multiplayer?
There are still many people who buy a Call of Duty game just for the multiplayer. I have spent many hours with the multiplayer in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and while it is solid and has lots of game modes, has no trouble finding matches. Yet there is just something kind of missing. I do not mean this in a bad way, but there is just nothing really new here and in many cases, I am sure some people may find themselves getting bored with the multiplayer mode in Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare quicker than usual. Multiplayer is not bad and if I have a spare half hour then it is a great thing to fire up and blow off some steam with, but there is just something lacking.
Zombies……. They Creep Me Out Man!
While the basic multiplayer may have left me a little underwhelmed, Zombies mode is just freaking awesome! The game is set in the 80’s which gets it major cool points right away. You play as one of four players, The Jock, The Nerd, The Tough Chic and the Cool Black Guy. It is a great mix and the character you play as is always random. This mode is set in an 80’s amusement park and at first, you are confined to a small area. As you kill zombies and fix areas that zombies can get in through you earn money. This money can be used to buy new weapons and ammo or access new areas of the park.
The amusement park is quite big and it can be very nerve-wracking if you find yourself quite a bit away from the other players and get into trouble as when you die if you are not revived in time, you have to go to a holding area…… which is actually pretty cool as you can play all kinds of old Activision arcade games and ticket style games. Working together is the best way to go about Zombies mode. Some areas require a lot of money so you will have to play fair and make sure you are all paying your fair share. It is very annoying when you spend your money opening new areas of the park, but everyone else just buys themselves weapons and ammo! I have had fun playing this with strangers, but getting online with a few buddies is an absolute riot.

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Final Thoughts
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is a game that is a lot of fun. I think if it was called anything else other than Call of Duty, people would be saying it is one of the best games of the year! I had a lot of fun with the game. The campaign was great, zombies were great and the standard multiplayer while not the best part of the game for me was still fun. In all this is a game that offers you lots and lots of fun and that is what gaming is all about. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is a game that could not be any easier for me to recommend.
