Block motherboard.vice.com Google Analytics Referral Spam Fix 100%

There is a new, ongoing problem with motherboard.vice.com referral spam (from Referral traffic source). I could not find a working solution to this issue anywhere. So what I had to do is try to find a way to fix this myself. I have created a very simple Filter which fixes this issue immediately, 100%!

The motherboard.vice.com spam in Google Analytics is coming up as Referral source and country of origin is Russia, like this:

After hovering over the link the full URL appears to be:

Here is a screenshot:

As you can see the Medium says it is Referral and Source is motherboard.vice.com. I have tried several ways to fix this issue. What has worked for me instantly, and is still working is this filter I have created for Google Analytics:

In Google Analytics click the Admin tab (left side of the screen near the top) and select All Filters. Next, click ADD FILTER. Fill out the first box asking you for Filter Name. Name it something like “motherboard.vice.com spam”. Next, the Filter Type needs to be set to Custom and Exclude must be selected. Click the Filter Field drop-down menu and select Page Title. Next, in Filter Pattern enter this:

The Case Sensitive box can be ticked, the filter will still work fine. Below you will see Apply Filter to Views, select one of the Available Views: All Web Site Data and click Add. Next, click SAVE and you’re done!

No Problem!

This ongoing issue was becoming very frustrating but creating this filter has fixed the motherboard.vice.com Google Analytics referral spam from appearing in the Supercomtech Google Analytics data. I hope this issue will also solve your problem, and I’m sure it will. Please comment below and tell us if you are happy with this solution.

Thanks for the comment. Did you wait 5 minutes and click on Active Users (not Pageviews last 30 min) in google analytics? You need to wait a bit and then you will see that it will stop the spam. After using this fix for Supercomtech there is no more motherboard.vice.com referral spam in google analytics. It has stopped and never came back.

I did exactly what you explained, but unfortunately i can see the spam results from these websites.

Sometimes the alphabetical characters with this spam stuff are not really what they seem to be.The page title should be copied directly from google analytics, then pasted in the field where you exclude Page Title. It should not be typed by hand.

Hi. I can understand how frustrating this is for you. I had the same problem and by blocking the Page Title I was able to completely stop the spam. It has not ever come back since setting the filter to Exclude the Page Title. I am sorry it did not work for you. You could try the http://www.supercomtech.com/block-fake-reddit-google-analytics-ghost-spam-fix/ this is basically the same fix but for a different spam, just replace the URL and the page title name. I hope you can find a way to solve this frustrating issue.

I have tried to filter my way through this problem about 15 times now by all kinds of differnet solutions – latest via your filter, yet they keep referring from motherboard.vice.com!!! It is really frustrating. Is there any kind of other solution to stop the “traffic” from this spam page?

    Yours doesn’t work on our site… :/
